While there are no reliable records of the early folktales, we do know that many of the early stories contained elements of Christianity. In the 13th century, the practice of telling folktales was banned. The most common type of magic in Russian culture was the unclean , or evil magic, which was performed by the peasants. In the case of the former, the user is a god or devil, who is protected by magic to protect them from evil. The practice of magic was also reassigned as unclean magic by the Catholic church, although it is still practiced today.
