Which city is the greenest? • To find out, I analyzed 933 of the largest cities in the world using Google Earth imagery. My goal was to calculate the percentage of green pixels for each city. Sounds simple, but it wasn’t so straightforward, as water and vegetation pixels were often mixed up. In the end, I built a simple Machine Learning algorithm to identify water pixels, allowing me to classify the remaining green or blue-ish pixels as vegetation. • However, relying solely on the percentage of green pixels proved misleading, as many screenshots included green areas outside the actual city limits.
