DST How to Predict and Manipulate Deerclops Spawn Timer

DSTclops is much more reliable than his Don't Starve single-player counterpart, if you know how his schedule works. Here's how to control him. • 1. Timer starts counting down on the morning of Day 28, as long as there is at least one player active on the surface. Deerclops' spawn timer on default settings is 2.8 days. This will usually result in a spawn on Day 30.8. • 2. When one minute remains until spawn, Deerclops' moan will begin, warning a randomly-chosen target player of his imminent arrival. Being on a boat or on the Lunar Islands at the one-minute mark will cause Deerclops' spawn to be cancelled and rescheduled for some number of winter days in the future--I am not yet certain of exactly how the number of days is calculated, but it seems to vary between 5 and 16. If moaning phase begins on the mainland and the player is on a boat when it ends, Deerclops' spawn will be similarly cancelled and rescheduled. If moaning phase begins on the mainland and the player travels to the Lunar Islands before it ends, Deerclops will spawn on the Lunar Islands. Disconnecting from the server, moving into the caves, or entering the Celestial Portal during moaning phase will cause Deerclops' timer to be reset to one minute. • 3. Once Deerclops has spawned, he will target a structure near his chosen surface player and attempt to smash it. If there are no structures nearby, he will wander aimlessly until he finds a structure, mob, or player to attack. After destroying a certain number of structures he will become sated and attempt to leave and despawn. This will cause his timer to be reset to 2.8 winter days. • 4. If Deerclops is killed, his timer will be reset to 16.8 winter days. • 5. If Deerclops dies or despawns in spring (or any other non-winter season, if you somehow keep him alive and loaded that long), his timer will be reset to 2.8 winter days. • 6. Deerclops' timer pauses in non-winter months. This means that he will typically respawn 71.8 days after being killed (16.8 winter day respawn timer + 55 non-winter days in the year). However, if he is killed with less than 1.8 (but more than 0) winter days remaining in the year, he will skip a year, respawning 126.8 days after being killed (16.8 winter day respawn timer + 110 non-winter days in 2 years). If you wish to obtain his eye every year, it is advisable to wait to kill him on the first day of spring rather than the last 1.8 days of winter, thus avoiding years in which he does not spawn. • 7. Deerclops' timer will have a delayed start if its scheduled unpausing occurs without any players on the surface. For example, if he is scheduled to spawn on Day 102.6 but all players were in the caves during the transition from night of Day 90 (the last day of autumn) to morning of Day 91 (the first day of winter), the timer will not unpause until a player returns to the surface. Any time spent in the caves is added to the scheduled time, so 1 full day spent in the caves before surfacing would reschedule Deerclops to spawn on Day 103.6. This only applies to the initial start time--returning to the caves again once the timer has been unpaused will not cause further delays. • Most of this is my own work, but I still owe a significant credit to Instant-Noodles' post here (some of Instant-Noodles' data is outdated now): https://forums.kleientertainment.com/... • Thanks also to Lakhnish Monster for some help trawling the forums / @lakhnishmonster • and to Jazzy's Games for the encouragement and good times on pub servers / @jazzysgames
