Jitsi is an open source alternative to video conference platforms such as Zoom. The best part? You can host a server on your own hardware! I'll walk you through the steps it takes to get up and running with your own server. Check out the Pre-Work section below to hit the ground running. • Note: At this time Jitsi is testing E2E encryption on the servers they host. At the time of this filming you will not have E2E encryption on the server you're hosting. Traffic is being decrypted on the server before re-encrypting and sent out to everyone else. If you're hosting your own server this shouldn't be a huge deal. • Guides I reference in the video: • Digital Ocean: https://www.digitalocean.com/communit... • Jitsi Self Host Handbook: https://jitsi.github.io/handbook/docs... • Pre-Work before getting started with the install: • Set up Ubuntu Server 18.04 on a virtual machine. • Assign that VM a static IP address • Point a domain name to your home ip address. I like: https://www.noip.com/ • • Obstacles I ran in to: • In pfSense I had to turn NAT reflection to: NAT + Proxy. This allowed clients both on and off the LAN to communicate. • Before you start troubleshooting, make sure to reset state tables and your VM. Starting fresh makes it easier to pin down problems and solutions
