Thunderstorm Flash Flooding - Extreme Wild Camping on the UK Moors • Join Matt and I on an extreme wild camp on the UK Moors during severe storms which led to localised flooding. We were reminded of the importance of some important lessons on this camp - always think ahead to what your pitch will be like IF bad weather hits - all to often, we fall into the trap of seeing that perfect pitch (which it may well be in good weather), but if it turns, that safe and picturesque pitch can almost turn into a death trap. We made many mistakes on this camp, pitching next to a brook which became a raging torrent as the rains from the thunderstorms hit the nearby fell sides. The level of the pitch is only a few feet from the water level, which began to rise rapidly. Matt decided on a minimal option of tarp and bivvy bag - it all went horribly wrong for him as his pitch turned into a swimming pool within about 30 seconds of the storm hitting. A bit of teamwork got him sorted and we both endured an awful (but exciting) night in the outdoors. • My new tent leaked on one area of the seams; this is NOT A FAULT OF THE TENT! Nordisk (and many, many other manufacturers) do not seam tape SilNylon tents - because tape does not adhere to the fabric. Instead, Nordisk use a folded seam with thread which swells when wet - to plug the minute holes caused by stitching - this system worked well on the recent video with rain throughout the night - HOWEVER, the rainfall rates here were 12 -14mm per hour from around 21:45 to 03:30 and on occasion, in excess of this - therefore, all things considered - the tent did well. Nordisk recommend you seam seal it, therefore I will be making a further video showing me doing this and then testing the results. • Again, the tent is NOT FAULTY - it is simply not seam sealed. • Enjoy the sounds of the storm as it echoes around the moors and fells - this was an atmospheric camp and one we won't forget - we got hardly any sleep! Trees heavy with rainfall creak under the force - this was a camp to remember. • *Disclaimer - yes we are human and make mistakes - I believe in making honest videos in the hope the help (and entertain) others - our lives were not in danger as we could have made the decision to strike camp and get back to the car - we had suitable experience, clothing and local knowledge to safely get back at any point - I won't be responding to any non constructive comments. Also, this area has a 'fire area' which is at it is - it was left neat and tidy, as we found it - I know open fires are a moot point, but this area has patch of earth was is traditionally used for that purpose. • Thank you for watching and see you all on the next adventure - Chris Matt. • CONTENTS OF THIS VIDEO ------------------------- • 0:00 - Pre Video Explanation (Come back to this if you like) • 5:26 - Thunderstorm Flash Flooding - Extreme Wild Camping on the UK Moors • Enjoyed this video ?
