A discussion about heparin induced thrombocytopenia and the pathophysiology of this complication of heparin therapy. HIT refers to type 2 immune mediated HIT, where as type 1 HIT is more frequently called heparin-associated thrombocytopenia and it is much more common and less severe. • NOTE: • One thing I want to make sure I clarify, although there is an overall reduced platelet count due to the mass platelet destruction, there is ALSO the excessive activation of the remaining platelets in the blood, which causes the blood to become hypercoagulable overall. As a result, despite the low platelet count, the blood will become more prone to abnormal clot formation, with both venous and arterial thromboses forming in the presence of a low platelet count.
