Breville Barista Express Grinder Adjustment Mechanism

While I had the Barista Express machine open for repair, let's look at the grinder adjustment mechanism. • It seems to be a rather simple, yet functional mechanism. There's a motor and gear box that turn the inner burr that is fixed in position. The outer or top burr can move up and down using a threaded adjuster. The adjuster is a large cog driven by the smaller grinder adjustment dial that has numbers from 1-fine to 16-coarse. Total vertical movement is less than a millimeter. • Newer machines apparently have a further adjustment on the top burr where it can be set in 1 of 10 positions to change the grind size. • There is nothing inside the grinder that appears to serve as a calibration feature and thus the grind numbers are just that, numbers.
