How To Find and Catch Paddlefish Spoonbill Catfish

Paddlefish or spoonbill catfish are some of the oldest and most prehistoric fish that swim anywhere in the world. They haven't evolved for millions of years and have a very complex anatomical system that allows them to send out electrical impulses into the water and pickup on the location of their primary food source zooplankton. Plankton is a microscopic organism and spoonbill have a mouth and body designed to filter feed through the water column to find them. Paddlefish can get massive, tipping the scales well in excess of 100 pounds. The construction of dams and overfishing have made them endangered in several areas of the country, but we are lucky enough to have a healthy population here. The Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency works diligently to monitor their population and has a strict two week time period where they can be targeted for harvest. They are great table fare and fight like the dickens. These brutes will truly pull your shoulder off when you snag into one. Fishing for these guys is really more like hunting since they don't hit traditional baits. You have to snag them instead of catching them on a bait of some kind.
