Demonstrators holding banners and shouting slogans • STORYLINE: • German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said on Thursday that his country and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council remained intent on a diplomatic solution to the dispute with Iran over its nuclear programme. • Steinmeier spoke after a meeting in Berlin among diplomats from the five veto-wielding members of the UN Security Council plus Germany over ways to press Iran to stop enriching uranium. • US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the meeting sent a very strong signal to Iran that the international community is united . • The meeting followed an agreement on Wednesday to give Iran 30 days to comply or see the matter taken up by the UN Security Council. • However there appeared to be some strains in the alliance, with the Chinese saying that only peaceful means must be used to push Iran, while the US and Britain used tougher rhetoric. • British Foreign Minister Jack Straw said Iran had made a strategic mistake. • We have shown very great patience with Iran.
