The number zero was very sad because he felt that he had no value. So no one liked him and no one played with him. A mathematician came to know about it and explained to zero that he had a higher value than anyone else. • Story of number zero by Ms. Palak • One day, all the numbers were playing in the park. They were all having a lot of fun on the slides and swings and in the sandpit. The numbers were shouting and running around. • Suddenly, number 9 saw someone sitting on the bench in the corner and crying. He walked up to the bench and realized it was number 0 and he was very sad. Number 9 asked number 0, “What happened? Why are you crying?” Number 0 said “I am very upset because I am lonely. 0 means nothing, it has no meaning. All the other numbers from 1 to 9 have meaning.” • Number 9 has a bright idea. He called all the other number “Come here everybody, come fast.” All the other numbers came running and made a circle around number 0. Then number 9 said to number 0, “You are the most important number. If there was no 0, then the numbers would stop growing after number 9. They would have no meaning.” Number 0 looked confused, “what do you mean?” he said. Number 9 asked number 1 to sit next to number 0 on the bench. “Everybody, what number do we have now?” Number 9 asked his friends. “Number 10!” everybody shouted. Then number 9 asked number 2 to sit next to number 0, “Number 20!” everyone shouted. He then told number 0, “See because of you, the 1 increased to 10, and the 2 grew to 20!” Number 3 shouted, “Now my turn!” And so, all the numbers one-by-one sat next to number 0, and everyone called out the number that they made together. • After 9 had had its turn and everyone shouted 90, Number 9 then explained that if number 1 sits next to number 0 and we add another 0, we get an even bigger number 100, and if we add another 0, we get 1,000. 100 has two zeros, 1000 has 3 zeros. • Number 0 was now feeling very happy and proud. He was smiling from ear to ear.
