Classifications Of Levers • Throughout history, mankind have developed several devices to make work easier. The most notable of these are known as the six simple machines. • A machine is any device which helps in doing work more easily and conveniently. • Simple machines are devices with no, or very few, moving parts that make work easier. The six known simple machines include.: • 1. Wheel and axle. 2. Levers. 3. Inclined plane. 4. Pulley. 5. Screw. 6. Wedge. Note that gears is also an example of a simple machine. In today's lesson, we shall be looking at levers. • Before we begin, please consider subscribing to this channel and hit the notification bell so you can be notified when new videos are uploaded. • Now let us begin with this simple question. • What is a lever? • A lever is a machine or any rigid bar which rotates about a fixed point called pivot or fulcrum. Examples of levers include.: SEESAW. PLIERS. TWEEZERS. A PAIR OF SCISSORS. WHEELBARROW. A lever has three main parts. These are.: load, pivot and effort. • The pivot is also known as the fulcrum. 1. Load.: The load is the force to be overcome by the effort. It is usually the object which is being moved. • 2. Pivot or fulcrum.: This is the turning or rotational point of a lever. • 3. Effort.: This is the force applied at one end of the lever to overcome the load. • In levers, the positions of the pivot, effort and load determines the class of the lever. Let us then look at the classifications or types of levers. • There are three different classes of levers. • This depends on the relative positions of the LOAD, PIVOT and EFFORT. The classes of levers are.: • FIRST CLASS LEVER, SECOND CLASS LEVER and THIRD CLASS LEVER. • 1. FIRST CLASS LEVER. A first class lever is a lever that has the pivot between the load and the effort. Examples of first class levers are seesaw, shoehorn, oars on a boat, catapult, pair of scissors, pair of pliers, pincers, beam balance, claw hammer, spanner, etc. • 2. SECOND CLASS LEVER. A second class lever is a lever that has the load between the pivot and the effort. Examples of second class levers are wheelbarrow, nut cracker, bottle opener, paper cutter, etc. • 3. THIRD CLASS LEVER. A third class lever is a lever that has the effort between the pivot and the load. Examples of third class levers are pair of tongs, tweezers, stapler, broom, mousetrap, etc. • Let us also look at some examples of levers in the human body. • Some parts of the human body acts as levers. Here, muscles exert a force while the joint acts as pivot. • For example. • : First class lever action occurs at the neck. Second class lever action occurs at the ankle. And also third lever action occurs at the arms. This brings us to the end of the lesson. Thanks for watching.
