G'day. Now I'm going to review my Roland, Acoustic Chorus, AC-33 Amplifier. There are 3 sound samples. Peizo pickup instrument, solid body steel string instrument and acoustic instrument with K K sound Meridian pro microphone. • • SETUP: For the purposes of this review I am using a Behringer XM8500 microphone and a Kala KA8SE 8 string ukulele with peizo pickup running into my Roland AC-33 amplifier which is then going into a Behringer xenyx 1622fx mixer via the stereo line outs and then into my computer via a Behringer UCA 202 interface. • AC-33 settings. ALL eq were left flat (centred). There is a little reverb on on the AC-33 globally and Space Chorus was on for all ukulele's. All voice overs were going through the AC-33. • Original songs, • Love Shine in my Life, • Anthony Glynn - Love Shine in My Life... • Shine a Light, • Anthony Glynn - Shine a Light (Origi... • I'm also playing my Jupiter Creek Music solid body, steel string concert scale ukulele. This is a Les Paul style instrument with a mid position single coil pickup. • For the record I have done quite a bit of work to this instrument. It didn't sound like this when I bought it. They are quite inexpensive instruments for what they are so I'm not really complaining. Mine was a diamond in the rough. I've fitted Grover machine heads with 18 to 1 ratio. These help a lot. I've also fitted a bone nut. As this one wasn't string through body the bridge was a PAIN to adjust so I've fitted an offset bridge. This isn't an issue if you have a string through body. The frets weren't terribly level so I've had them levelled. I haven't touched the electronics. The neck is quite flexible. This is a little bit of an issue for me because my odd technique has me pushing down on the neck and the body but if your technique is better than mine it shouldn't be a problem. The sustain is phenomenal. • I also run a K K Sound Meridian pro preamp (the battery powered one) and microphone with this amp to amplify various ukulele's which aren't equipped with pickups. • OK, my Marshall / Fender reference doesn't make sense to everyone. Fender amplifiers are famous for sparkling clean sounds. I'm associating this with the AC-33. Marshall are know for high gain sounds but not particularly delicate on its low gain setting. For better or worse I'm associating this with the Street Cube. • Roland AC-33 vs Roland Street Cube. The AC-33 is more specifically aimed at the requirements of an acoustic musician. It has a nice sparkly LOW gain sound. The Street Cube has a much greater range of sounds and in particular is great for high gain electric guitars yet even on its lowest gain setting its higher gain than an AC-33. A Street Cube is louder and I think that this can be attributed to its higher gain. Its also lighter to lug around. The AC-33 is not AS loud but in this day and age of sound limits its loud enough. The perception of volume sitting behind the AC-33 can leave you wanting more volume but out in front of it its loud enough. • Busking Rig / Setup. When I go busking I have a case with a Ukulele in it in one hand and I'm pulling a large suitcase with wheels with the other hand. In the suitcase I have the Roland AC-33 with the battery pack REMOVED so that it won't accidentally turn on. I learn't the hard way and damaged some rechargeable NiMH batteries. I have a short microphone stand (I perform seated), 2 dynamic microphones (1 as spare), 2 microphone leads, a K K sound microphone for amplifying my acoustic ukulele's, an instrument cable if I'm using my internal pickup equipped ukulele, a foot percussion stomper (it works adequately acoustically for the purpose of busking, some short 1/4 leads and a folding seat (I got lucky and found one that just fits in the case (it sticks out the top a little). • • All recordings, songs and pictures, ©Copyright Anthony Glynn 2012
