Rev. Dr. Mebratu Kiros Gebru discusses the Ethiopian Orthodox Divine Liturgy • http://web.trinity.utoronto.ca/divinity/ or http://tinyurl.com/orthodoxstudies • Presented at the Liturgy Class in the Orthodox Studies Program at Toronto School of Theology • What is the Orthodox Studies Program? • With an exclusive partnership with the Faculty of Divinty at Trinity College (A member institution of the Toronto School of Theology, federated with the University of Toronto) a unique Orthodox Studies Program is being offerred at the University of Toronto. • • To date, the Orthodox and Eastern Christian Studies Diploma Program is the only accredited Orthodox Studies Program in Ontario that offers students a unique opportunity to learn Orthodox Theology at the Adult Level. • • The program introduces education in Eastern Christian and Orthodox theology to three student audiences: • • those seeking a Masters level degree in Orthodox studies; • • degree students who wish to include some knowledge of Orthodox tradition in their own course of studies; • • adult learners who seek a mature and rich knowledge of Orthodox tradition on a non-credit basis. • • With permission, senior undergraduates are also welcome. • • For non-credit students, the requirement is only regular attendance, class participation and doing the readings; no essays or exams are required. For credit students, the work is what is naturally expected in Masters-level courses; Advanced Degree students - who can enrol as reading course - would have appropriate extra work. All classes are taught in evening, for benefit of students with jobs. • Find out more: http://web.trinity.utoronto.ca/divinity/ or http://tinyurl.com/orthodoxstudies • One Student's Comment: Fr Mebratu does mention a lot of very good points but there are some categories used in this particular lecture which could potentially portray the Sacrament of Communion as isolated from Sacrament of the Assembly, Sacrament of the Kingdom, Sacrament of Entrance, Sacrament of the Word, Sacrament of Unity, Sacrament of Anaphora, etc. • The other issue is that Fr Mebratu mentions an absence of Catechumens which suggests that either the catechumenate is not in use as a missiological apparatus or that the Ethiopian Orthodox Church does not have Catechumens. Perhaps we can hope that the existence of the rite of Dismissial of Catechumens would encourage the Church (this includes all Orthodox Rites) to have active work in Catechizing those we 'mission' too, and encouraging the use of the Catechumenate as method of evangelism and mission instead of appealing to reductionist methodologies and presuppositions. If Orthodox missiology is Liturgical, Trinitarian and focused on Theosis, then the Official use of the office of the Catechumenate is an integral sacramental work of the Church, for the synergistic cooperation of man's union with God. • Still, this lecture does give a fascinating insight into the Traditions of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Glory to the Holy Trinity.
