30-year-old weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz has been stuck in Malaysia since early 2020 due to Covid-19. After taking silver at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, she hopes to bring home the first-ever gold medal for the Philippines at Tokyo 2020 in Japan. • “I’ve been here since February 20. 2020, she says. I don’t know how many months. Maybe 17 months, almost two years. I really miss my nieces and nephews. I miss my mom and the food.” • She’s been training for her fourth, and likely last, Olympics. • Hidilyn competed in the Beijing 2008 Sumer Games as the first female weightlifter to represent the Philippines. • “My training goes like… I wake up it, training, then I eat, then training, then eat. Sometimes I have a massage. Whenever I feel pressure, I need to talk to my sports psychologist who will advise me on how to handle this situation. Because you know the Olympics is really, woo! The pressure is so high.” • She returned for the 2012 London Games before winning the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics in Rio. Now vaccinated and ready for travel, she’s on her way to Tokyo with just one goal in mind: taking home the first ever gold medal for the Philippines. • The country has won three silver medals and seven bronze, but no Filipino athlete has ever won a gold medal at the Olympics. • “It extended for another year and we’re in a pandemic. It serves as hope and inspiration to the Filipino people that I am so blessed to represent. And of course, Olympics. The Tokyo 2020 Olympics might be my last Olympics. Because, of course, it’s my fourth Olympics already, and I’m not sure if I can do my fifth Olympics, so this one I will do my best.” • • Subscribe to our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/2TwO8Gm • Bloomberg Quicktake brings you live global news and original shows spanning business, technology, politics and culture.
