In this video we will talk about the History of Genetics, its chronology, the most important milestones and how they have affected the history of mankind. • 1. MENDEL'S LAWS. When crossing certain specimens he realized • that some characteristics of these plants (such as size and color) were maintained in the second generation, in a ratio of three to one. The Austrian monk Gregory Mendel concluded that some traits are 'stronger' than others, and are more likely to be found in subsequent generations. His experiments laid the foundation for the transmission of heredity. • • 2. DARWIN'S THEORY. In 1859 Charles Darwin's book 'The Origin of Species' was published. The naturalist went down in history with his theory of evolution, which stated that populations and individuals evolve through a process of natural selection, which allows those who are best adapted to the environment in which they are found to survive. • environment in which they find themselves. Darwin spent five years in the Galapagos Islands (Ecuador) studying the animal life and fossil remains of the area. • 3. WHAT IS A GENE? The Dane Wilhelm Johannsen coined the word gene to describe the Mendelian units of heredity, in 1910 Thomas Hunt discovered that chromosomes are the carriers of genes. The next milestone was achieved by Avery-MacLeod-McCarty in 1944, when they showed that genes, whose function was already known, were made up of DNA. • 4. DNA DOUBLE HELIX. Francis Crick and James Watson discovered the so-called double helix of DNA. Thanks to the model it was found that DNA is a double helix, that the two strands of the helix are formed by phosphate and sugar nucleotides. The structures are joined by hydrogen bonds that specifically pair an adenine (A) with a thymine (T) and a cytosine (C) with a guanine (G), these are the bases of DNA. • 5. THE GENETIC CODE IS DECIPHERED. The genetic code was deciphered: three nucleotide bases determine each of the 20 amino acids that exist. This finding, on which the genetic code is based, is due to Severo Ochoa, Marshall Nirenberg and Heinrich Matthaei. The way of sequentially joining DNA fragments (one of the bases for understanding how the genome and heredity work) is a product of the work of Frederick Sanger. • 6. DOLLY SHEEP. In 1996 the first cloned animal in history was born: Dolly the sheep. The cloning of the first mammal from an adult cell became not only a milestone in genetics but perhaps in science in the 20th century. Dolly lived six years even though she presented premature aging, since at birth she was the age of the cell from which she was cloned. • 7. HUMAN GENOME. The sequence of all the genes of the human genome (all the genetic information of a person) was revealed, a milestone reached after a complex process of genetic mapping. • If you are interested in the history of genetics and want to answer the most important questions that have been asked over the years such as What is a gene? What is DNA? Why am I similar to my parents? What is the human genome? What is the history of cloning Dolly the sheep, or simply want to learn more about genetics, this video is for you!
