Dr. Lera talks about laryngeal paralysis in dogs with Felony, who was a fourteen-year-old female Lab at the time this video was filmed. • Laryngeal paralysis is a common condition of middle to older aged dogs that involves loss of normal function of the larynx. The larynx is a collection of cartilage flaps, or laryngeal folds that sit in the back of the throat over the entrance to the trachea (wind pipe). Muscles attach to the larynx allowing it to open when breathing and close when the dog is eating and drinking to protect the airway. When the larynx becomes paralyzed, the folds remain in the closed position even when the dog is trying to breathe. Breathing becomes labored and difficult. We infinitely appreciate her kindness. These are her words regarding symptoms/tips: • • Noisy respiration - was beginning to hear a whistle type sound when she was trying to breathe. • • Excessive panting - would even tend to pant when she was sitting or laying down by you. • • Tongue was showing purple in color. • • Started showing some reduced activity and exercise intolerance. • • Was also beginning to show weakness in her hind legs. • • Outside hot heat makes the condition much worse - if a dog over heats bring dog immediately in to air conditioning. Have dog lie down with wet towels and use and/or use a fan on dog to cool them down. (oscillating fans work better) • • Important to keep dog from getting overheated. • Connect with us: • Facebook:   / heronlakesvet   • Instagram:   / heronlakesvet   • Twitter:   / heronlakesvet   • Website: https://www.heronlakesvet.com • Email: [email protected] • DISCLAIMER: The content provided in this channel is not intended to be a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
