The blastocyst consists of: • Inner Cell Mass (ICM): Forms the embryo. • Trophoblast: Forms the placenta. • Day 5-6 - Hatching and Early Implantation: • Zona Pellucida: The blastocyst sheds the zona pellucida in a process called hatching, allowing it to implant in the uterine wall. • Attachment: The blastocyst begins to attach to the endometrial epithelium of the uterus, initiating the process of implantation. • Day 7 - Implantation: • Trophoblast Differentiation: The trophoblast differentiates into the cytotrophoblast and syncytiotrophoblast, which help in embedding the blastocyst into the endometrium and initiating placental development. • Understanding the first week of development is crucial for diagnosing and managing early pregnancy conditions, such as ectopic pregnancies and early embryonic loss. Mastery of this phase is essential for specialties like obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine. Whether preparing for FMGE, NEET PG, or USMLE, exploring the first week of development enhances your embryological knowledge and clinical skills.
