#1 from 2 Mélodies, Op.81 (1907) • ----------------------------------------------- • Phillip Sear plays a wistful piece by the Russian-born pianist and composer Eduard (or Edouard) Schütt (1856–1933). • ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Born in St. Petersburg in 1856, Schütt studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory under Theodor Leschetizky and later continued his musical education in Leipzig. His career as a composer and performer spanned the late Romantic period, and he was known for his lyrical and expressive style. He gained recognition for his piano works, which were popular among both professional musicians and amateur pianists of his time. Schütt's compositions included a wide range of pieces, from solo piano works to chamber music and orchestral compositions. While Schütt's music was widely performed during his lifetime, his popularity waned in the 20th century, and he is now considered a minor figure in the history of Russian music. Schütt's highly finished music is cosmopolitan in style, but, rather like that of Fauré, it has some very distinctive harmonic and technical fingerprints that make it immediately identifiable. He died in Vienna, where he had spent much of his later life, and where he had a successful piano teaching practice. • The 2 Mélodies were dedicated to the Viennese Jewish pianist Gisela Springer (1873—1941?). Springer appeared as soloist with the Berlin Philharmonic in 1912, 1916, and 1921 and is thought to have died in the Łódź/Litzmannstadt ghetto during World War 2. You can read more about her and other forgotten musicians who, like Springer, performed in Berlin in 1907 on this webpage, which also has a photo of Springer: https://tinyl.io/BaA8 . • This is definitely a more intimate piece than its impassioned companion. • Thumbnail image created with Ideogram ( https://tinyl.io/BG8m ). • #russianmusic • ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Played by Phillip Sear • http://www.psear.co.uk (Email: [email protected] • WhatsApp: http://wa.me/441444483794 ) TikTok:   / pianogems
