Erstmals veröffentlicht in dem • Pfadfinderliederbuch Lied zur Trommel im Jahr 1933 vom DPB bei Günther Wolff herausgegeben. Weitere Verbreitung hat das Lied durch die 2. Auflage des Liederbuch Sankt Georg 1935 erfahren. Das Buch (und seine Lieder) fand auch weite Verbreitung in der von den Nationalsozialisten mittlerweile verbotenen bündischen Jugend. • Das Lied ist also KEIN preußisches Soldatenlied und auch KEIN NS Marschlied. Die Wortwahl in der letzten Strophe lässt sogar eher darauf schließen dass der Autor des Liedes dem damals herrschenden Zeitgeist kritisch gegenüber stand (die Benutzung des Wortes Mutterland anstatt Vaterland ). • Die verwendeten Bilder haben nur symbolischen Charakter um die Stimmung des Liedes zu untermalen.
