The tenth day of Muharram is known as Ashura where Muslims are encouraged to fast for a great reward. This year the day of Ashura falls on August 7. Shia Muslims mourn the tragedy of the death of Imam Hussain, as this is considered the day he was killed. Although this is acknowledged by the majority of Muslims, the Shia community place a greater significance on it by attending sermons known as 'majalis'. • Shia Muslims may also take part in other acts of mourning, such as 'Matam' - this is the act of tapping one’s chest and signifies the remembrance of suffering. • Throughout the month, which ends on August 28, Muslims are encouraged to take part in spirituality including fasting, reading Qur'an and donating to charity. The month also marks the 'hijrah' (emigration) of the Muslims to Medina and the beginning of the Islamic new year. • It is considered disrespectful to host celebratory events during this sacred month - which is known as one of the four most important months of the Islamic calendar. • According to Muslim charity Islamic Relief, the sacred months offer the opportunity for Muslims to seek the mercy and favour of Allah SWT. Thus, there is an opportunity to gain more reward every day; but also the danger of gaining more sins with our bad deeds. There are simple things we can do to take advantage of the benefits of the sacred month of Muharram. Fast: Keep a fast on the 9th and 10th Muharram (the day of Ashura), or on the 10th and 11th Muharram. • From https://www.mylondon.news/news/uk-wor...
