Wood gasifier generators during WWII • I made a documentary about firewood use during WWII. I didn't find much info overall, but despite all that I know about the era, I had no idea that there were vehicles powered by firewood. Gasification is a process that converts biomass- or fossil fuel-based carbonaceous materials into gases. • Steam, smoke and gas are emitted from burning wood and when filtered and collected, can be used to fuel motors. Many vehicles were fueled with woodgas derived from firewood (called synthetic gas or 'syngas') at the time and this process came in handy when oil, coal and gas were in short supply.
