Actually, the equilibrium between the carbonyl group (C=O) and Gem-diol prefers to remain in the left side. Consequently, the percentage of the carbonyl group (C=O) in the equilibrium is more. However, changing the controlling factors like electron deficiency of the substituent attached with carbonyl group and further stabilization of the produced di alcohol (OH) by hydrogen bonding shifts the equilibrium towards the right side. I have discussed these phenomena through various examples which may be helpful for basic understanding from the molecular interaction point of view. • Links for some related videos are given below.
