Learn Old Norse free online. Lesson 2.2 Pronunciation of double consonants • This lesson focuses on the pronunciation of the double consonants of Old Norse or Old Icelandic applied to spelling and phonetics. • In Old Norse, consonant groups are sometimes formed that are not called digraphs, but double consonants. These are formed from the letters b , d , f , g , k , l , m , n , p , r , s and t ; the letters are written with two of each letter. This happened only in the Latin script, not in the runic scriptures, in which there were no equal runes in pairs for this purpose. • In general, there is no consensus on how it should be pronounced, and it is usually stated in the manuals the sound is doubled , which is understandable for certain sounds, such as trills, hisses, fricatives, nasals or laterals, but not when it deals with plosives. An explanation to this and solution provided by Modern Icelandic is to double the sound in the manner of the Italian double consonants: if the consonant is plosive ( b , d , g , k , p , T ), it is pronounced first weakly, there is a short pause and the same consonant is released with more force. With the rest ( f , l , m , n , r , s ) there is no problem to make a long pronunciation. • However, for the double consonants of g , k and p there was an additional rule indicating a change of the consonants before the s or the t within the same syllable. The sounds of g and k changed to / x / and p to / f /. A clear example: • · ggs / ggt would be / xs / and / xt / like kks or kkt • · pps / ppt would be / fs / and / ft / • If this was not the case, the double g sounded / ɢ /. • References (last accessed on 06/13/2018): • · BARNES, Michael; A New Introduction To Old Norse Part I: Grammar; 2008 • · BAYLDON, George; An Elementary Grammar of the Old Norse or Icelandic Language; 1870 • · Double letters in Italian (https://jakubmarian.com/double-letter...) • · GLENDENING, P.
