On April 27th, the Museum of Care held a talk about the Soviet philosopher E. V. Ilyenkov and his essay What is Personality . We were joined by founding members of International Friends of Ilyenkov, Corinna Lotz and Kyrill Potapov. Together we tried to grasp what it could mean to be a self in a collective. • • In this forthcoming translation of an essay from 1979, Ilyenkov critiques a number of traditional approaches to personality in psychology, philosophy, and popular culture, and presents his own synthesis. His essay is a rich exploration of Marx’s suggestion that a person is “an ensemble of social relations”. In this session, we explore this essay, with questions and examples from a range of sources. • • The early edition of the essay, as well as Corinna Lotz's book on Ilyenkov, are available in the Library of Care: • https://museum.care/room/library-of-c...
