Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a rare congenital heart defect where the left side of the heart does not develop as it should. For more information on the diagnosis and treatment of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, visit http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-co... • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is treated with multiple surgical procedures. The first procedure is to reconstruct the aortic arch so blood can flow to the brain and body. This typically occurs within the first few weeks of life. The second surgery for patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs at approximately 4 to 6 months of age. This procedure creates a conduit to allow blood flow from the top of the body into the lungs. The third procedure for hypoplastic left heart syndrome is done around 2 years of age to help blue blood from the body flow to the lungs for oxygenation.
