A test ride and first impressions of the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 — both on road and off road! • I have been a big fan of the Kawasaki Versys-X 300 ever since it was announced almost 3 years ago. It seemed like the perfect small adventure bike with its 17 19 spoked wheels, 300cc parallel twin engine, long travel suspension and factory rear rack for carrying luggage and other necessities. As specs began to emerge, the Kawasaki immediately seemed less appealing because of its limited suspension travel (5 to 6 inches) and rather low ground clearance (7.1 inches). Compared to a dual sport bike like the DRZ400S, these numbers aren't so great once you start riding aggressively or getting into the rough stuff. Despite these numbers, the Versys-X 300 received rather favorable reviews from sites like FortNine and ADVPulse, so it has remained at the top of my list for a bike that I might consider for adventure riding in the future, but I really wanted to get my hands on one to try it out for myself. Lucky for me, my buddy Matt ended up purchasing one and offered to let me take it for a spin on our last ride together in the beautiful Cajon Pass and Baldy Mesa OHV area.
