Somebody thought the flashing was helpful, I guess. This starts with a karaoke-style play-along at a Drum Clinic in Paris, France, sponsored by the French drum magazine ‘Batterie’. The song is ‘If You Can’t Stand the Heat…’ from the album ‘Feels Good to Me’. I’d rather have played it live with the band, but it is what it is. • Things look up with the following free solo. The accelerating 9-stroke roll around the toms at 2’10” gives a nice pitch up and down effect, a little like a pedal tom or tympani. From about 3’37” I’m playing some of the stuff I used on King Crimson’s ‘B’Boom’ from the album 'Thrak', much influenced by Gavin Harrison’s work. • • These drum clinics used to have an educational remit. In a small room, you could answer questions and talk intimately about the fine points of flam taps if that was your thing. But as the drum companies, drum magazines and retail stores noted the size of an audience who like to hear the drummer playing the most notes as loudly as possible in the shortest possible time, the workshop aspect fell away, and the venues got bigger and noisier. Pretty soon it was just another stadium rock gig, complete with flashing lights. • • I’ve taught and demonstrated in almost all conceivable circumstances; with and without drums, with and without karaoke backing tapes; in tiny booths at NAMM shows on behalf of Simmons Drums; at noisy Drum Festivals with twelve guys on the menu one after another; on behalf of Tama drums or Paiste cymbals; one on one at the University of Kingston UK; in small classes at the Academy of Contemporary Music, Guildford UK, and so on. I admire professional teachers a lot, but I was just playing at it. I never quite found my footing and it was pretty much something to do to keep my hand in, inbetween tours. Hopefully there is someone out there who attended one or two of these events or classes and got something useful out of them. I'm very aware that at least something I said, even fooling around, could go straight to the heart of (especially) a beginner, so I was super careful with what I said and did. • #drummer #drumsolos #jazzdrummer #tamadrums #shorts #billbruford #kingcrimson #yes #billbrufordsearthworks
