The survivors reach Cebu, where Ensign Chuck Palmer (Tyrone Power) is one of them. They must separate, according to their leader. Chuck travels to Colonel Benson on Leyte with Jim Mitchell (Tom Ewell), who informs them that General Douglas MacArthur has given Colonel Benson orders to quickly surrender his men. • Chuck assists Micheline Presle's character, Jeanne Martinez, a Frenchwoman married to a Filipino plantation owner, in obtaining medical care for a pregnant woman. Chuck is begged by Jeanne to stay and fight, but instead he buys an outrigger canoe and assembles a crew of Air Corps warriors in a last-ditch effort to sail to Australia. A member of the Filipino resistance named Miguel (Tommy Cook) saves the crew as the boat capsizes. The Americans manage to escape captivity, and Chuck finally runs across Jeanne and her covert resistance supporter spouse Juan (Juan Torena). • To assist in establishing a stay-behind network to acquire information on the Japanese, Chuck is instructed to remain in the Philippines. Later, in an effort to discover where the rebels are camped out, Juan is brutally murdered in front of Jeanne. Chuck and Jeanne are reunited at Christmas 1943 after Jeanne joins the resistance. They start falling in love. • After three years of conflict, a Japanese patrol traps Chuck, Jeanne, Jim, and the rest of their group inside a church. When it seems as though they will be destroyed, American plane squadrons suddenly materialize overhead, and explosions can be heard, signaling the start of the liberation of the Philippines.
