The Tudors were partial to the brutal and barbaric public punishments used for severe crimes, however they equally enjoyed the public penance of lesser crimes too. • A common theme in the punishment methods used by the Tudors was public penance. The concept was simple; punish a criminal openly in front of the general public to deter others from committing the same act in the future.
