For his 1st fight at Welterweight, undefeated prime “Sugar” Shane Mosley takes on the strong and skillful 11 year veteran in Wilfredo Rivera who had fought in 5 different weight divisions since his pro debut back in April 1988 and faced elite competition such as Oscar De La Hoya and twice against Pernell Whitaker. • For Mosley, it was the first time in 33 fights in which he was facing someone naturally stronger and bigger than him as he was fighting at 135 pounds in all his previous 32 outings where he often overpowered his 32 opponents in that division. • Prefight records; Mosley 32(30)-0, Rivera 30(19)-3-1. • In August 1997, Mosley scored a UD12 victory over Phillip “No Deal” Holiday to win the IBF World Lightweight Title and made 8 successful defenses between November 1998 and April 1999. After a successful stint at 135, he moved up to face Rivera in his 147 pound debut. • Entering the scheduled 10 rounder, Rivera had wins over past best former World Champions in Carlos Palomino, Livingstone Bramble Lonnie Smith. However, his most notable fights at that point were against Pernell Whitaker (2x) where he put up a tremendous effort in both bouts and arguably won the first bout in the eyes of many observers. • On the other hand, Mosley had defeated top oppositions in Golden Johnson, Jesse James Leija, John John Molina Phillip Holiday. • From the get go, Mosley stepped on the gas pedal and land thunderous lefts and rights to the body and head against the veteran who was able to take his best shots who also return fire upstairs and downstairs, which he set up with a consistently sharp jab as opposed to Shane who relied a lot on his natural speed, reflexes and power. • Sugar Shane was ahead after the midpoint, but it was no walk in the park as Wilfredo gave him a lot of trouble being the bigger and more seasoned combatant who kept coming back despite getting pummeled with everything Mosley had to offer for 27 minutes of intense action. • In the corner before the 7th, Jack Mosley (Shane’s father and trainer) advised his son to up his body work to slow him down as he was inconsistent with his work downstairs particularly after the 3rd. • With 30 seconds left in the 10th, the insanely tough Puerto Rican veteran finally went down and out from a pulverizing left uppercut after absorbing ridiculous punishment in every round particularly the body punches which ultimately paid dividends with half a minute left to the final bell. • This was the first time in his 11 year career that he was stopped after hitting the canvas although he had been stopped via cuts before. However, to his credit Wilfredo Rivera was highly game despite the loss and more than held his own and nearly made it to the final bell. • Interestingly, the majority of observers predicted Mosley to win via decision. • On June 17th 2000, Mosley went on to achieve perhaps his greatest career feat; dethroning a prime “Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya via SD12 to win the WBC IBA Welterweight Crowns in a highly exciting bout that went down as one of the most memorable world title fights in the division. • Please enjoy this highlight of one of Shane’s biggest wins, and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE for more boxing goodness!
