#shorts • In the year 2000, the Pyrenean ibex, a subspecies of the Iberian ibex, was declared extinct after the last surviving individual, a female named Celia, died. However, scientists had taken skin samples from Celia before she died, and in 2003 they used these samples to clone her. The cloning process was successful, and a female ibex clone was born on July 30, 2003. But the clone died just seven minutes after birth due to lung defects. This was the first time that an extinct animal had been cloned and the first time a species has gone extinct twice.
