The Heinkel He 177 Greif (Griffin) was intended to be the Luftwaffe's number one long range heavy bomber. Designed in the 1930s, it was built in large numbers. Unfortunately the unusual low drag design where two engines were grouped in a single nacelle on each wing, proved to be the aircraft's Achilles heel. • Luftwaffe aircrew nicknamed it the Luftwaffenfeuerzeug (Luftwaffe's lighter) because the grouped engines had a habit of bursting into flames. That serious defect, combined with other teething problems, prevented the bomber from being rolled out operationally in large numbers after its initial introduction in 1942. More He 177s sat on the ground during the war than flew missions. Continued refinements improved the aircraft's airworthiness, but it was never flown in the vast numbers originally envisioned be the Luftwaffe. • Zeno, Zeno's Warbird Videos http://zenoswarbirdvideos.com. • Visit our aviation DVD store at http://www.zenosflightshop.com for the World's largest selection of World War 2 vintage jet aircraft aviation videos
