This is the application from 8:1-8. Let your hands be strong recorded twice (vv. 9, 13), signal the immediate application in light of these great promises; here are the practical implications upon the contemporaries of the prophet. • vv. 9-17 – answers “so what?” • vv. 9-13 call to Israel to respond to God; man’s responsibility – “you who are listening” (Zechariah's day). • vv. 14-17 essentially the same with emphasis on the expectations on Israel. . . what God will do to bless his people and “these are the things which you should do” (vv. 16-17). • Theodicy - reconciling suffering and evil in the created world with the idea of a good and loving God. How can this behavior be a part of God’s plan? • v. 10b “I set all men one against another” • v. 14 “just as I purposed to bring about evil to you” • First, God is sovereign, everything is part of his plan (Lam 3:37-39; Amos 3:6), yet his authority over humanity does not make him the author of evil. God removed the moral restraint from evil men (Isa 19:2), i.e., God employed evil men (sovereign) to his glory ; that is disciplinary and should be expected (i.e., covenants). • Remnant theology - watch the video • 29 Sept 24
