Coccyzus americanus, a.k.a. the Rain Crow is not related to crows at all, but instead to roadrunners. They're called Rain Crows because they tend to call from treetops on humid, overcast days where rain is likely. In fact, the day I took this video on the trail, a storm was rolling in and the sky fell on me on as I hiked out. It was so nice to see one so clearly! The Blue Jays were NOT as happy as me, however. • The famous type of parasitic cuckoo is the Common Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus) of European origin. Yellow Billed Cuckoos only occasionally lay eggs in the nests of other birds. They have a very fast nesting cycle. It only takes 17-21 days from hatch to first flight! • Yellow Billed Cuckoos are federally protected songbirds in the USA. They have no hunting season. There may also be a migratory bird protection law on them, since Yellow Billed Cuckoos migrate between North and South America every year. • ------------------------------ • Image: Yellow-billed Cuckoo (Coccyzus americanus) • License: This file is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 Generic license. • • Uploader: This image, originally posted to Flickr [to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fi...], was reviewed on 10 September 2012 by the administrator or reviewer File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske), who confirmed that it was available on Flickr under the stated license on that date.
