Laxmi is an elephant with a very unique personality and background. Unlike most of our resident elephants who lived years in almost starved conditions, Laxmi’s life was filled with sweets, treats and everything unhealthy, leading to a dangerous state of obesity that threatened to cause her joint problems. • Understandably, Laxmi grew to be dependent on treats and it was a long and difficult journey to bring her to a healthier weight. However, the elephant care team has found creative ways to get her to exercise by using healthy, but tasty foods as a reward. As a part of her daily routine, she gets rewarded with dates and nuts during her walks, and also utilises her haynet enrichment to exercise her back and neck.
