If you measure from base to summit, Mount Everest is actually the world's second tallest mountain. The first is Mauna Kea—a one million-year-old dormant volcano in Hawaii. The peak of Mauna Kea is only 13,802 feet above sea level, but its base spreads deep down into the ocean. In total, the mountain is 33,500 feet tall. Mount Everest climbs only 29,029 feet. • Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more. • Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/science • Science Insider on Facebook: / businessinsiderscience • Science Insider on Instagram: / science_insider • Business Insider on Twitter: / businessinsider • Tech Insider on Twitter: / techinsider • Produced by: Keegan Larwin, Jessica Orwin
