The Year 536 • The year 536 was nominated as the worst year to be alive in 2018, by medieval scholar Michael McCormick, but what made this year so terrible? In the year 536, a volcanic eruption caused a volcanic winter that darkened Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia, for a full 18 months. Without normal sunlight getting through the ash in the atmosphere, summer temperatures dropped, causing crops to fail and millions to starve to death. Few years later another volcano erupted and the third one in 547.
