How to identify Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) • This is orchardgrass, a Eurasian grass from the family Poaceae that is commonly cultivated, but has become an escaped weed. It is a perennial that sets its seeds in midsummer. • This plant grows in a bunchgrass habit and has leaf blades which are folded from the bud. The ligules are membranous and there are no auricles. The leaves are light green in color and hairless. • The seed head is a spike of one-sided clusters of seeds on small branches. • The plant grows an extensive, dense shallow root system, and only reproduces via seed. • Orchardgrass likes a variety of different soils and will tolerate both high heat and heavy shade. • This plant is edible and is cultivated as a livestock forage. • • Sources: • Weeds of the West, 5th Edition (1991) by Tom D.
