For the complete cantata 'Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe' BWV 156 go to: • Bach - Cantata Ich steh mit einem Fus... • Thirty of the more than two hundred surviving cantatas by Bach are about death, while many more refer to death indirectly. The lyrics of cantata 'Ich steh mit einem Fuss im Grabe', performed by the Netherlands Bach Society conducted by Lars Ulrik Mortensen, refer to the gospel reading of the third Sunday after Epiphany, in which Jesus heals a leper. The piece is thus torn between two alternatives: on the one hand God is beseeched to end the sinner’s suffering by receiving him into heaven, and on the other the prospect of being healed is very attractive. The central aria 'Herr, was du willt' forms the pivotal point between these two extremes. The alto solos alternate with a cheerful instrumental concertino for oboe, violin and continuo. • For more information on BWV 156 and credits of this production go to https://www.bachvereniging.nl/en/bwv/... • For the interview with conductor Lars Ulrik Mortensen on BWV 156 go to • Mortensen on Bach Cantata BWV 156 | N... • Recorded for the project All of Bach on February 1st 2014 at the Geertekerk, Utrecht.
