As a treat for New Year's Eve 2022, Master of wine David Allen, Wine-Searcher's Wine Director tastes A wine from the legendary Maison Leroy. Alas the budget only runs to the Bourgogne Gamay, but he is, none the less, impressed by the 2019 vintage of this wine, which clearly shows how the house has gained its incredible reputation. • Maison Leroy is a negociant based in Burgundy's Cote de Beaune. It makes a range of wines that vie with those of the legendary Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in terms of price and quality. The house was founded by Francois Leroy, a wine merchant from Auxey-Duresses, in 1868. It was expanded under his son Joseph and grandson Henri throughout the early 1900s, and in 1942, Henri Leroy purchased a half share in Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. • In 1974, Henri's daughter Lalou Leroy took over this co-management of DRC alongside Aubert de Villaine; in 1980 she inherited Maison Leroy from her father. Leroy left Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in 1992 following a dispute with Villaine, and switched her to focus to her own domaine. • Domaine Leroy was created in 1988 when Lalou purchased estates in Vosne-Romanée and Gevrey-Chambertin. Her purchases included 21 hectares (52 acres) of prime vineyards including plots in several grand cru sites in the Côte de Nuit and Corton. • Lalou Bize-Leroy has worked passionatelt to ensure her wines are some of Burgudy's most compelling - even this relatively humble Bourgogne Gamay is no exception. • To find out more about this wine and where to buy it follow this link to the Wine-Searcher website: https://www.wine-searcher.com/find/do... • #winetasting #redwine #winesearcher #bourgogne #gamay #bourgognegamay #masterofwine #winelover #frenchwine #maisonleroy
