May 20,1932: Amelia Earhart departs Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, in her Lockheed Vega on her solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic. On May 20-21, 1932, Earhart became the first woman—and the only person since Charles Lindbergh—to fly nonstop and alone across the Atlantic. Flying her red Lockheed Vega (now on display in the Museum), she left Harbor Grace, Newfoundland, Canada, and landed 15 hours later near Londonderry, Northern Ireland. • Learn more about aviation and spaceflight pioneers from the 1920s and 30s on the Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight Gallery website at http://pioneersofflight.si.edu • No audio, this video is silent • (Via National Air and Space Museum Archives, VE01479)
