Germanys famed Oktoberfest celebrates 200th birthday

SOUNDBITE (German) Peter Hartmann, visitor to Oktoberfest: • A positive change is that there is a wider range of attractions (compared with the past). A negative change is certainly that with the increase of the international degree of popularity, when you imagine 55 years ago there were approximately 200,000 to 300,000 visitors and this was a record figure at that time, now there are three, four, five up to 6 million visitors in the meantime. SOUNDBITE (German): Friedrich Steinberg, landlord of Hofbraeu beer tent: • The enthusiasm for the Wiesn (Oktoberfest) has changed. In the past, it wasn't almost as busy as today. Also on Saturdays. There was no single day, when you had to lock up (the tent). Today, on Saturday afternoon at the latest, you have to lock up the tent. Same on Friday evenings. If you don't lock up the tents, the aisles are overcrowded and blocked, so that the waitresses cannot get through and can't serve and sell the meals and bring beer anymore. And the much feared so-called Italian weekend which we always had, has changed much more for the positive. Also with regard to tips, they are great, one must say. • 14. And Oktoberfest is the best place to be, because it is one of the place that brings all the nations all together to drink and have no war, have only peace, which we all stand for.
