Tennis Toss Positioning for the Flat, Slice and the Kick Serve: • FLAT SERVE: It can be struck comfortably from 1 or 12 o’clock. 11 o’clock is possible but it might lead to balance issues on landing. Furthermore, players with flexibility issues might find discomfort rotating into 11 o’clock leading to sideways bending of the torso. • KICK SERVE: Easiest toss location for the kick serve is 12 o’clock. Due to the sideways position of the torso at contact 11 o’clock is executable and might lead to more kick for players with good flexibility. 1 o’clock makes kick impossible due to the forced vertical position of the racquet head at contact. • SLICE SERVE: The slice serve is difficult to execute from 11 o’clock and will result in an accidental kick serve due to the more lateral position of the racquet head at contact. 12 and 1 o’clock is a a good toss location for the slice. For players that have difficulty slicing, tossing the ball at 2 o’clock will turn into an automatic slice serve due to the forced lateral swing path and vertical position of the racquet head at contact. • PS: if you are lefty everything that I wrote needs to be reversed. 💪💪👍👍 • LEARN TO HIT ALL SERVES FROM 12 O’CLOCK • Pete Sampras one of the great servers of all time learned early on to master all three serves from the same location. The advantage is disguise since the opponent will not be able to pick up on any tendencies. Additionally, hitting serves from 12 o’clock can result in more power. If the toss is located further away from the core (to either side 10 or 2 o’clock are extreme cases) the contact occurs outside the body core. It’s similar to doing pull ups.
