In 1883 the volcanic mountain, Krakatoa, erupted. This eruption was so huge that is could be heard 4800km away! Krakatau, as it is often referred to is said to be the largest eruption in recorded history. In this video we explain the 1883 Krakatoa eruption, what actually happens and what happened afterward. • • The year is 1884. The seas off the coast of Zanzibar in Africa are calm but dotted with debris floating in with the tide. Locals look out in curiosity, only to be met with a ghastly surprise – in amongst the rocky rafts are human skeletons. • Little did those unsuspecting witnesses know, the debris they saw was from an event from almost a year earlier – and over 7000 kilometers away. Hello and welcome to today’s episode of the FYI Show. Today, we’ll be talking about the infamous 1883 Krakatoa eruption. • Volcanic eruptions occur when movements in the Earth’s crust cause the build-up and sudden release of rocks, magma, and huge amounts of ash. Tectonic plates – titanic plates of rock that make up the surface of the Earth and on which continents rest – grind up against each other, shaking the ground and releasing magma from below. The largest eruptions cause earthquakes, tsunamis, and have historically caused the ruin of many unfortunate civilizations that find themselves in the blast zone. • Today we will be talking about one of the most famous of them all – Krakatoa. This volcano was the source of one of the largest eruptions in human history. • • • Music: • Art of Silence - by Uniq • • Further Reading: • https://www.livescience.com/28186-kra... • https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1883_er... • https://www.britannica.com/place/Krak... • https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/...
