www.EnglishGrammarHelp.com The COLLECTIVE NOUN is the over-all name for a group of persons, animals, or things: people - team, crowd; animals - herd, flock ; or things - bunch, bundle of towels. The collective nouns are descriptive words such as pride, fleet, gaggle, covey, cluster, pack, mischief and many more. They are words like class, army, crew, pack, herd, gang, group, and team. When they act together as a singular unit or group, they require a singular pronoun or possessive adjective. When a collective noun is used for a group where individual members act separately or as individuals, they take a plural noun or possessive adjective. There are 2 rules to know when using collective nouns so that the nouns and verbs are in agreement: Rule 1- when the group acts as a unit, the collective noun takes a singular pronoun or possessive adjective when the members act together as a whole.; Rule 2 - when the group acts as individuals the collective noun takes a plural noun or possessive adjective when the members act separately as individuals. The squad put on their uniforms. (Note: This is just the opposite in UK English, so be aware that this is one of the major differences that will show up on tests such as the ACT or SAT.) • You can be the smartest one in your class and excel at writing - school assignments, computer programming and coding, learning another language for personal and business communications, and more - by learning the basics of grammar the easy way.
