This is the first video in a series on mathematical problem solving. David introduces five general problem solving techniques which can be applied to almost any maths problem.Throughout the following videos we shall be exploring a series of different techniques, some more advanced than others, but we will always be using these five in the background, and sometimes the advanced tools are just special versions of the basic 5. • David illustrates the five approaches to problems by using them to answer the question What is the sum of the first n odd numbers? in two different ways. He also sets you three more problems to have a go at solving using the 5 basic tools. • UCL Maths Dept Twitter: @MathematicsUCL. • UCL Maths Dept webpage: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/maths/. • Music: • -Variation 3 Canone all'Unisono (intro) and • -Aria da Capo (outro) • from the Goldberg Variations by JS Bach, performed by Kimiko Ishizaka (CC0 no copyright). • Images: • Chocolate: http://freesvg.org/chocolate-background (public domain). • Video made by David Sheard with assistance from UCL.
