In perspective, the cost of medical bills, property damage, litigation fees, etc. are undeniably greater than the cost of a dog bite liability premium. However, this is not enough for many dog owners. • Why? • Dog owners who fail to understand the importance of dog bite liability insurance fall in two categories; (1) he/she's dog is calm and sweet and more importantly, lacks a history of aggressive behavior and (2) under-educated about dog bite liability insurance. This week, lets tackle the important issue of renters insurance and dogs. • In a situation where a landlord imposes a no-pet policy, many dog owners choose their dog over the rental property. Consequently, they aggressively search for pet-friendly rental properties. According to a recent survey conducted by Apartments.com, nearly 75 percent of renters own a pet (compared to 43 percent in 2012), in which dogs accounted for 78 percent. That is over to say, 30 percent more renters potentially under-educated about dog bite liability. • Does Renters Insurance Cover Dog Bite Liability? • Renters insurance and homeowners insurance are similar in regards to their positioning of dog bite insurance. A standard renters insurance policy provides any of the following: • Limited coverage on dog bites • Usually excludes specific breeds (e.g. Pit Bulls, Dobermans, Rottweiler, and German Shepherds) • High premiums • Required to purchase additional coverage • Review your current renters insurance policy with your insurance agenct; does it provide coverage for dog bites? If so, are there exclusions? How much are you covered for? The Federation of Insured Dog Owners (F.I.D.O) encourages all renters to purchase dog bite liability insurance. • F.I.D.O., the Federation of Insured Dog Owners, Inc., now offers the Covered Canine Policy, an exclusive product and benefit for F.I.D.O. members only. This policy is available in California, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wisconsin. It will protect you should your dog bite an individual and cause harm. It does not exclude any breed of dog and starts as low as $75 per dog, per year. • Source: http://blog.dogbitequote.com/does-ren...
