On average, PsA appears 10 years after onset of psoriasis, but some patients will have the conditions diagnosed simultaneously, and in as many as 15%-20% of patients, arthritis precedes psoriasis. • Because of its diverse clinical features, diagnosis of early-stage PsA, when appropriate therapy is recommended, can prove difficult. Unrecognized and untreated, PsA can often lead to a diminished quality of life and impairment. PsA also increases the risk for serious comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disease. • Experts in rheumatology and dermatology at the University of Toronto discuss strategies for evaluation and early diagnosis of PsA, review the complex differential diagnosis, and report on current therapeutic options.
