For many people the question of whether or not women are treated more unfairly than men in society is so obvious that it would be obscene to challenge the assumption. But if we are genuinely interested in creating a more equal society, then as society develops our biases should be routinely reevaluated with sober eyes. How should the issues that affect men, such as conscription, incarceration rates, suicide rates, circumcision, custody issues, steroid use, low university attendance rates, poor school performance, etc, enter into the gender equality discussion? In this episode of the podcast I speak with Professor of Economics, Bryan Caplan from George Mason University. Bryan uses a range of techniques and tools from economics to analyse today's most important social issues from a quantitative standpoint. We discuss whether the status of women as a victim class still remains compatible with an evidence based approach to building a fairer, more empathetic, and more egalitarian society in 21st century western democracies. • ►For more information about Bryan's work: • http://www.bcaplan.com/ • ►For Bryans book on feminism see: https://amzn.to/3AZ9lQl • • These conversations are supported by the Andrea von Braun foundation (http://www.avbstiftung.de/), as an exploration of the rich, exciting, connected, scientifically literate, and (most importantly) sustainable future of humanity. The views expressed in these episodes are my own and those of my guests. In this episode I am particularly interested in understanding the great strides that have gone into creating the fair and just (although not perfect) societies that we in the west are fortunate to live in today. What steps should we be taking to protect what we have, and to continue developing a society in which all members are able to flourish? • • Menu: • 0:00 - Introduction • 1:30 - What should we be aiming for? • 4:17 - Why feminism? • 7:40 - Feminism and politics? • 8:30 - Empathy for men's issues. • 15:48 - Criticisms of feminism. • 20:20 - Passions and concerns. • 24:30 - Quantifying unfairness. • 32:01 - Hidden costs and values. • 37:00 - Pensions and the pay gap. • 40:50- Choices Vs. oppression. • 42:30 - Representation and positions of power. • 52:10 - Women in the workforce. • 1:01:34 - Childcare. • 1:12:35 - Representation and quotas. • 1:22:30 - Circumcision. • 1:25:44 - Increasing empathy for men's issues. • 1:29:25 - What direction should we be going? • 1:33:50 - Justified defensiveness academic feminism. • 1:49:30 - Bryan's books. • ►Subscribe And Turn On All Notifications To See More: • https://www.youtube.com/c/EscapedSapi... • Watch These Videos Next: • ►Hacking The Blueprint Of Life | Michael Levin | Escaped Sapiens #37 • • Hacking The Blueprint Of Life | Micha... • ►How Your Evolved Psychology Controls You | Diana Fleischman | Escaped Sapiens Podcast #28 • • How Your Evolved Psychology Controls ... • ►3 Months Lost at Sea, Human Endurance and Ingenuity | Steve Callahan | Escaped Sapiens Podcast #22 • • 3 Months Lost at Sea, Human Endurance... • ►A Blueprint For Mars Colonization | Robert Zubrin | Escaped Sapiens Podcast #5 • • A Blueprint For Mars Colonization | R...
