Ep. 179 ARE WE ON SCHEDULE WITH THE LANDSCAPE OF DUNWOODY MOSAIC??? • Hey Everyone! Welcome to my studio! • I will be focusing on The Landscape of Dunwoody mosaic for the next few months. It is a 36 foot long, 161 square foot mosaic going in a niche on a busy street corner in Dunwoody, GA. I am partnering with mosaic artist Jennifer Freeman. We are using glass and porcelain tile with thinset and silicone. This week I am continuing work on panel 7, and will be moving 8 up top this week. • 1:02 Here's where I'm at this week. Starting with 6 7 on the workbench. I'll be focusing inside the OO's this week. • 1:27 This green area is easy for two reasons: 1. I'm following a lead line that doesn't split and 2. It is close to the edge where I am sitting so it is easy to reach. • 1:55 I get after the green area using 3-4 different seafoam green shades of stained glass and some fused inclusions I made earlier. For this part I am using silicone as my adhesive. • 4:28 Next I decide to knock out the pink area since it is small and easy! There are some nice Bullseye pink inclusions to add. • 5:00 Glass apreciation. • 5:14 Next I decide to work on the easy green area under the pink. I have a nice textured green that I am using for interest.ry • 5:41 Finally, I start to tackle the large green area inside the O, and I make pretty good progress. • 7:14 Jennifer is insisting that I deliver panel 6 to her. I remove the pieces on the seam between panels 6 7 and store them for installation. • 8:00 It's a gray day when I head over to Jennifer's studio. • 8:18 I've arrived and Jennifer is very happy now! We lay it all out so we can get a good look at it and make sure to have each panel buttoned up. We have finished: • Panel 1, Panel 2, Panel 3, Panel 4, Panel 5 (just one little area left), Panel 6 needs ceramic work, Panel 7, 8, 9 and 10 still need lots of work. Panel 11 just needs the fused foliage, and Panel 12 is complete. I count about 7 completed panels and we are at the halfway point. That puts us ahead of schedule!!! This is my first look at the ceramic work Jennifer has completed around the letter N on panel 5. It looks pretty good, but there is one small area that needs to change. • 11:11 Jennifer does not use my very clear method of labeling pieces, but has made up her own way of labeling. As long as we are all on the same page in the end, it's no problem. • 11:33 Jennifer shares her approach to the ceramic work in the tree trunks. • 12:20 I head back home and tackle rearranging the panels on my work table. When it is all set up, I decide to take after the fused foliage at the bottom of panel 8. But I cannot start until the rest of the O is placed. So I use silicone today and tomorrow I will mix up some thinset and then I can use it for the cathedral glass as well. • 14:25 Back to work, laying the O and fitting and glueing the foliage - my favorite part!!! • 15:41 Jennifer wants to share about the choice of materials for different design elements and how we lay the pieces or the andamento. We have chosen: • 1. Landscape background portion- Crazy paving of porcelain tiles • 2. Letters - Stained glass with squares and rectangles • 3. The foliage in trees and bushes - fused glass pieces with a smooth bumpy texture • 4. The tree trunks - Thicker porcelain floor tiles cut in longer geometric pieces. • Then she show how she cuts a few trunk pieces. • 18:29 The next day, in my studio I mix up the thinset and get after the rest of the O outline and then the green area with some cathedral glass. I chose it because I wanted the iridized finish it has. Each time I use a piece, I make sure there is 100% coverage with the white thinset so the color is going to be the best. • That's Putting It Together, Ep. 179. Thanks for watching.
